I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. This trilogy is a huge example of transmedia storytelling and how a world has been created through delivering a story through different types of story telling mediums like Comic books, Graphic novels, games and films. Henry Jenkins defines Transmedia storytelling by stating
“a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience”
This is very true when it comes to DC comics and it’s creation of Batman. Batman was created in 1939 by Artists Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. It was first appeared in the comics in May of 1939. By 1966 it had become television running for three years in total. By 1989 Tim Burton made the first Batman full feature which then follow three sequels. Now how does this relate to my technology the Samsung Smartphone. In reference to Jenkins article he states “Modern media companies are horizontally integrated”. This means that certain media will be attracted to the different mediums of storytelling and they hold particular interest.
The Samsung Smartphone has comic book apps which lets people receive stories from another Transmedia storytelling form. For example DC comics has an official app where you can download comic books that are available of their website each week. the great thing about this app is it allows people to receive the content and then write reviews for the app itself or for comic books they have viewed. This app is adaptable for the Samsung Smartphone and is a huge benefit for Samsung because through it’s open source software development it can connect with stories like Batmen and expand the on line participatory culture of creating more stories.
